Shutting down Illinois
By Gervarus Giles
While many college students look forward to partying over spring break, Darious Thomas made connections through music with another artist, Leland Philpot, from Chicago, Illinois, and performed with him at the Columbia College annual gospel concert.
Thomas shared his experience of being in Chicago for the first time, as well as performing in front of hundreds of people.
“At this point in my life, I feel like anything is possible. Sometimes I can’t even begin to think about how blessed I am to be able to be booked for a performance all the way in another state. The drive was about four hours long, but I took a few of my friends with me and the experience was priceless. We took tons of pictures, met a lot of new, talented people, and even met the famous gospel artist, Jonathan McReynolds. Even if I had the option, I wouldn’t have chosen any other way to spend my spring break vacation,” said Thomas, Broadcast and Cinema Arts major.
Kevin Finch, friend of Thomas, expressed how thankful he was for the trip to Illinois.
“Taking the trip to Chicago, Illinois, was beyond amazing for me because I had never been there before and I love to travel. It was also exciting to be there in support of my friend and I feel like he did an amazing job with his performance. The concert consisted of many different people with amazing talent performing to their best effort, but the part that sent me over the top was when I saw Johnathan McReynolds walk in and come to the stage. I truly enjoyed myself and I had the chance to network with many different people there. I would not trade this experience for anything in the world,” said Finch, Communication Studies major.
Chicago artist, Leland Philpot, shared his experience as well regarding his performance with Thomas.
“When Darious and I first did the song together the night before in his hotel room, I thought to myself like ‘wow this guy has a ton of energy.’ There was even a few times that I didn’t think I would be able to keep up with him, but when we hit that stage, there was so much love and support coming from the audience and it amazed me. I’m beyond glad that Kevin, G, and Darious were able to come down to Chicago and hang with us over their spring break. Darious is a great artist and I’ve never seen anyone like him. I hope to perform with him again someday and I know that he’ll become something great in the future,” said Philpot.
