Living for the youth
By Gervarus Giles
With the school year coming to a close, Madonna student, Darious Thomas, decided to take a personal trip to Gompers Elementary-Middle School to check on the academic standings of the students there and tutor those in need of help.
During this time, he helped several students with reading, writing and arithmetic, and his presence was greatly appreciated by several teachers.
“I just think it is extremely nice for a college student to take time out of his busy schedule to come up to our school and help our students with their work. I know his mother must be very proud of the things he does and I hope to see him again in the future,” said Michelle Parker, Math Teacher.
One of the students, Demetrius Porter, says his experience working with Thomas was a positive one.
“It’s like I always had negativity around me with the drugs, fighting, gangs and cursing, but every time I see Darious visit our school, I feel like he’s the big brother I never had. It’s nice to know that someone really cares about me instead of using me to benefit themselves,” said Porter.
Peter Lewis, Gompers Math teacher, says Thomas reminds him of his son because of the positive choices he chooses to make in his life.
“I did not know that Darious would be as helpful as he was when he first came here. He sits in our classroom and helps all of the students with the lowest grades in the class and helps them to understand different ways to solve a problem to make math easier for them. It really helps me as well because it saves me time to move forward with the students who do understand,” said Lewis.
Lastly, Thomas reflected on his own experience as a tutor and how great it felt to help the youth.
“When I was young, I didn’t really have that person to tell me right from wrong or to help me with the things I found difficult in life. Even though our Alternative Spring Break trip was over, I didn’t see that as a reason to give up on those kids so I decided to go myself and continue to make sure they were on the right path. When you give your all in to anything, the results are endless and that’s why I help them,” said Thomas, Broadcast and Cinema Arts Major.
