Spangas Coney Island delivers quick food, friendly service

By Sarah Rachfal

If you are looking to get off campus for a quick meal between classes, Spangas Coney Island is the place to go.

Since 1987, Spangas Coney Island has been a metro Detroit favorite, and in March 2010 they opened its doors at the southwest corner of Newburgh and Six Mile Road in the same plaza as Walgreens.

I visited Spangas after work one day around dinner time before I headed to class.  The staff was friendly and greeted me immediately.  The restaurant was clean, family friendly, and the menu had a variety of food at prices that would make any college student want to dine at.

As I looked through the menu, I could not decide what I was going to order.  I decided on the chicken finger pita, knowing it is something I would like, and a Baby Greek salad.  The lettuce and toppings on the salad were fresh and delicious and the pita came out hot.  My waitress was very attentive to my table and although she was busy, I did not feel ignored.

Aside from pitas, wraps and sandwiches, Spangas has a variety of salads, burgers, coney dogs and Greek specialty dishes like souvlaki, gyros, and Spangas' homemade spinach pie and serves breakfast all day.  Although I did not have dessert, I was tempted to order one of their homemade desserts, such as fruit and cream pies, carrot cake and baklava.

The quaint restaurant, conveniently located minutes from Madonna, is going to have something on the menu for everyone and will not disappoint.
